Who are we?

The Foodbank was set up in 1999 to provide free food parcels to the community, and relies on generous food and monetary donations for its continued operation. Food parcels are customised to suit the individuals or family’s needs, and will feed them for three days.

The Kapiti Community Foodbank Inc is a community owned member organisation. The foodbank is operated by a Volunteer Board who are elected annually. As required by law under the Incorporated Societies Act we operate under a registered constitution. The foodbank administers a service on behalf of its members.
Membership of the foodbank is open to all approved by the Board under the constitution. Daily operations of the foodbank are overseen by our Operations Manager and her Assistant. They deliver services to clients who meet the criteria set down by Board policy

Elected Board Members come from the Membership and  any individual member can be nominated and elected at the Annual General Meeting; usually held on the third Thursday in October. (Request Member information link)
Finding a permanent home for the Foodbank has been a significant journey. After two years in Kapiti Rd, KCDC returned the building to the local Iwi. In July 2020 they offered the vacant building at the rear of the Kapiti Community Centre which had been occupied by the Disability Information Centre. Six months later, the building was condemned due to the presence of black mould and the front of the Community Centre was offered as the new space. This was not to be as the mould issue spread to the rest of the building and within six months the Foodbank relocated to Coastlands whilst a permanent home was sought. The Kapiti Community responded to fundraising and the new building (an ex classroom) was purchased.

With true community Spirit, MenzShed Kapiti stepped up and fitted out our entire building working over several months with their Volunteers to convert the ex-classroom into a truly great place for us to operate the Foodbank from. We can never thank them enough.
Members of MenzShed Kapiti, who were the lead organisation in fitting out the new building for the Foodbank when it arrived on site worked solidly on the building for many months to bring it to the great community place it is today and a great place to run the organisation from. MenzShed, are still assisting today as they construct a Food Donation box for one of the retail outlets in Kapiti.
